We recently had the pleasure of photographing Cleveland based Baroque and early music ensemble Les Délices for their upcoming season. Specializing in little known works from the French Baroque, their performances sparkle and quietly transcend with nuance and subtle dynamics.
Not unlike their performances, our photo sessions were also collaborative, and we created several formal portraits, as well as a performance series shot at 78th St Studios and Survival Kit gallery and performance space. Our goal was to create formal portraits of the various configurations within the context of a typical, post-modern performance space, conveying the contemporary essence behind the exploration of their early music repertoire. The clean, well lit industrial space of 78th St. Studios provided the perfect backdrop. The performance space aesthetic was of a similar vein, and the dynamic images of the ensemble playing their instruments is completely real and natural.
Good portraiture, in or out of the studio, always requires a connection between the subject and the photographer, so that the essence of the portrait can shine through and speak directly to the final viewer.
